Website legal requirements

In the United Kingdom, there are certain basic legal requirements that any website must comply with. At a bare minimum the site must display the following information:

  1. Your business name, geographic address (PO Box is not sufficient) and email address.
  2. You must show your VAT number whether or not you are actually accepting online payments.
  3. Companies must show the companies registration number, the place of registration, and registered office address.
  4. You must display membership details of any relevant professional bodies and organizations.
  5. Prices on your site must clearly state if they are inclusive of VAT and delivery charges.
  6. The displayed business name must be the name of the business that your potential clients will enter into contracts with. Any ‘trading as' names must be clearly marked as such.

Please remember that I Am Not A Lawyer (I'm a web developer!). The above is a statement of the law as I understand it but if you have any questions I would strongly recommend that you contact a suitably qualified solicitor.
